Food Safety: "As sure as eggs is eggs" You must be in "no doubt" of your food supply chain.
2017
Food Businesses and in particular Pubs, Restaurants and Hotels must make sure they have robust supplier management systems after the recent Fipronil egg scandal.
The Food standards agency (FSA) initial calculation rose from around 23,000 to 700,000 eggs that had entered into the UK from Dutch producers.
Although the FSA indicated it was unlikely contaminated eggs posed a risk to public health, it advised to withdraw any products containing them, food suppliers to the trade had used contaminated eggs in its stocked products, particularly businesses who supplied to Pubs.
The FSA stated “ We are reminding Food Business of their Legal responsibilities, which include informing the FSA or FSS ( Food Standards Scotland ) and relevant local authorities immediately if they have any reason to believe that a food that they have imported, produced or distributed does not comply with food safety requirements”
It is perhaps the reputational damage in being linked to a food scandal, that highlights the need to control and track your food supply chain.
An industry insider commented “ If UK businesses are not able to effectively track their supply chain, they are at risk of reputational damage, which can lead to customers going elsewhere or losing trust in a brand “
